Briana N. Coogan-Bassett of Warsaw NY is the featured artist at Dansville Chalk Walk 2013 on Saturday, July 20.

This summer event is sponsored by the Dansville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Briana’s chalk art demonstration will launch the festive day on the main sidewalk at the Dansville Public Library at 10 a.m. Following Coogan-Bassett’s talk and illustration, community chalk artists will expand throughout the historic business district to chalk the walks in front of partner businesses.
The artistic staff at Expressive Ink will create and discuss a chalk art display starting at noon outside of their business at 199 Main St.

Coogan-Bassett works in a variety of mediums, especially acrylic, watercolor, chalk pastel, paper, clay, cake and fiber. In particular, she enjoys making nature-themed art that focuses on the plight of endangered animals. Coogan-Bassett is currently writing and illustrating a book.

With a 2009 Associate Degree in Fine Arts from Genesee Community College, Coogan-Bassett received the Virginia Carr Mumford Scholarship for artwork exhibited at the college. In the same year, she was awarded first place in the 'Artist's Choice' category, as well as second place in 'People's Choice' category at the Perry Chalk Festival, qualifying Briana as the featured artist at the festival the following year.

Coogan-Bassett’s work has been exhibited at Sonnenberg Gardens, where she was a Budding Artist Finalist; at the Richmond Memorial Library, where she was featured with the Batavia Society of Artists; and at Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Coogan-Bassett has had solo exhibits with both the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts and the Arts Council for Wyoming County. Her work is currently part of the ACWC satellite galleries tour and has been for the past two years.

Coogan-Bassett was one of six artists to participate in GCC Fine Arts Alumni Exhibition in autumn of 2012, at the Roz Steiner Gallery. Coogan-Bassett’s illustrations have appeared in several past publications of The Genesee Naturalist.

Coogan-Bassett received the 2013 Rising Star Scholarship from the Arts Council for Wyoming County, which includes a booth at this year's Letchworth Arts & Crafts Show & Sale as well as a solo show early next year.

Partnering with the Dansville Area Chamber of Commerce for this event are Noyes Health, Tony’s Pizzeria, Clockworks Wine and Liquor, Expressive Ink and Dansville Public Library.

Other businesses and organizations will participate by hosting community chalk artists at their building locations. A full list of host businesses will be posted on the Chamber’s Facebook page, Discover Dansville, as well as dansvillechamber.com closer to the event date.

The event runs rain or shine; community artists will be provided paper on which to create their chalk illustrations inside host businesses if it rains and the artwork will be displayed in the hosts’ windows.
Community artists are invited to participate and should register using a form available at Dansville Public Library, Tony's Pizzeria or dansvillechamber.com's forms and document page.
