Mustangs take down Red Raiders
Dansville defeats Hornell on Senior Day in pool
HORNELL — Hornell and Dansville returned to the pool for some LCAA swimming action on Saturday morning, and the Mustangs cruised to the 82-75 win over the Red Raiders on the HHS senior day.
While the Red Raiders did not come away with the win, head coach Mark Kelly was just happy to be able to put together something for his seniors and send them off on the right foot.
“I am so happy to be able to do this. I’m so happy to be able to give it to my guys who have been with me for three or four years. I am so happy to give it to Nate Day and Alex Lockwood, because they might not get a chance. Their loves are football and wrestling, and they might not be able to get to do it there. So, I’m just really happy that we were able to give them something,” said Kelly.
In the pool, it was the usual cast of Red Raiders that led the charge. Dane Thompson won both the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle and was also the final leg of the winning 400 free relay. Thompson won the 50 free with a time of 25.08 and the 100 free with a time of 57.19. Calem Striker also had a strong day as he was part of the winning 400 relay team, and he also finished second in the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle. Gavin McGowan also contributed a strong effort, finishing second in the 50 freestyle and second in the 100 breastsroke.
“Gavin has been a leader in the water for me. Breaststroke is his thing, but every once in a while, he challenges himself by trying something different, and I love that. Dane is a sophomore, and he’s making huge strides this year. He missed four weeks due to the shutdown, but when he came back, he got right back to work. He’s accepted every challenge that I’ve given to him. He is going to be a top dog for a couple of years in this county,” said Kelly. “Calem is an eighth-grader, and he’s coming along really well. He wants to be a distance guy, but he’s also qualified in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, so we might have to get him sprinting too. He’ll do whatever we want, and he’s young enough to mold and make into whatever he wants. He’s going to be great all the way around.”
The Red Raiders now prepare for a busy week with three more meets on the schedule, including one final home meet on Thursday against Avon.
