The Dansville Junior Mustangs capped off an undefeated season with the CYFL championship after defeating LeRoy on Saturday.

CALEDONIA — On this Halloween (Oct. 31) there were "no tricks and no treats" ... it was all about hard work, dedication and football!

A couple of years ago the Leroy Seniors came from behind to win an overtime battle in the mud at Hartwood Park in the CYFL title game. Here in 2021 Dansville coach Ron Cartwright's crew sought to avenge that setback. Sunday's game was played at Hamilton Field at Caledonia-Mumford Central School and was a defensive battle that the Mustangs would win in a very slim 8-6 victory over the Junior Knights.

The teams waged the "battle of the red & black" which was scoreless in the entire first half. Each squad was looking for that opening that would give them the edge in the game. The contest continued late into the third quarter before either team could break through. Dansville would get on the board first after putting together a drive at the end of the period that would culminate with a Cam Struble touchdown run that made it 6-0.

Oddly enough, in a defensive battle, a little bit of added offense would be the difference in the game, as Paxon Berry booted the PAT making it an 8-0 game headed into the final quarter of action.

The defenses again did their thing in the fourth. Leroy, much like a couple of years back, put on a surge late in the game and would score on their final offensive drive. Then it would be defense that would dictate the outcome. Dansville's "D" would stop the Knights bid for the conversion resulting in a thrilling 8-6 Mustang victory to give coach Ron Cartwright's team an unbeaten season and a Community Youth Football League championship!

The Dansville Junior Mustangs celebrate with the trophy Saturday after capping off an undefeated season with the CYFL championship after defeating LeRoy.

Strangely enough, I had people asking what all the sirens were on Sunday afternoon. It was the fire department welcoming back the Dansville Junior Champs!

Coach Cartwright commented, "This was a fun day and felt great to bring a Championship to DANSVILLE. We had a huge parade when we arrived back into town. I want to thank the board, parents, kids, coaches and everyone else who made this possible. Go DJM!"

Carter Coburn stepped in and played center for teammate Noah Cava (who could not be there). Mac Hartson was there supporting his team with an injury. Chase Houghtaling provided solid blocking all day.
