Dansville junior caps stellar season at state meet

MIDDLETOWN — Madison Jacobs made history for the Dansville track and field program on Friday, becoming the first Dansville shot putter to compete in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Track & Field State Championships in Middletown.

Jacobs didn't just compete, she came home with a medal and a spot on the podium.

Jacobs was seeded sixth in the Division II shot put and placed fifth in the state with a throw of 34-7.5 to cap off a stellar season.

Jacobs finished in third place at the Section V Championships, but then dominated at the NYS Qualifier, tossing a 35-11.25 in the finals to grab a first-place finish and earn the trip to Middletown.

“Maddie has had a great season, winning both the LCAA County Championship and State Qualifiers. Coach Terry Conway breaks down all parts of the throw with Maddie at practice. She works on each part until it becomes totally natural. She really puts what she learns into her throwers. Maddie is great at taking feedback and putting it into action,” said Dansville girls coach Eileen McMaster.

Jacobs entered the weekend as a junior and gained valuable experience for another run at the title next season.

“We look forward to next year, her senior year, when she’ll compete in both Indoor and Outdoor track,” said McMaster.
