What's that old saying — "no matter how much things change, they seem to remain the same"?
Well, I guess that's true of the Wayland-Cohocton cheerleading dynasty that's been kept intact through many, many, many years! Strangely enough, at the recent Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Feb. 8 at "the Nest" I had the pleasure of seeing longtime legendary cheer coach Rose Fox during the induction of one of her cheerleaders to that hallowed venue. Jane Schubmehl Bernard, 1995 graduate, was one of the many heralded cheerleaders in this long successful line of young ladies and gentlemen to help wallpaper the fieldhouse with sectional championship banners. That coaching baton was handed down to Julie Oas and Amanda Ruscitto-Azzi for many years, and now who would think that the ball would stop rolling here?
In the 2018-19 season cheerleading disciples Marissa O'Neal and Brooke Wagner have taken over the program, and sure enough, you guessed it, the Wayland-Cohocton Golden Eagle Cheerleaders captured the Livingston County Athletic Association's Division I Championship on Friday nigt!
Congratulations to this year's rookie skippers and the team, consisting of seniors Alex Duclos, Sophia Holmes, Charlotte Kennedy, Tabea Nothnagle and Sam Smalt; juniors Hailey Gotshall-VanGorder, Chloe Fox, Michelle Conti, and Arianna Celentano; sophomores Allie Chapman and Makaylah Drum; and coaches Marissa O'Neal and Brooke Wagner.
