Canisteo-Greenwood, Fillmore among top winners

WELLSVILLE – The mats were laid out, the bleachers were packed, and the intensity and excitement levels were at the max.

Saturday afternoon saw nearly 20 schools from across the area converge inside the Lion’s Den for the 8th annual Wellsville Spirit Spectacular.

Many schools wanted to become this year’s Grand Champion, but only one could do so. In this year’s competition, the best was saved for last.

After being named the Division I champions and the most spirited squad last year, the Lady Indians of Keshequa made their way to the top in 2019, as they collected 75.90 points to become the Spirit Spectacular Grand Champions.

"This was our eighth annual Spirit Spectacular with another great lineup of Section V Cheerleading," Wellsville cheer coach Liz Hurley said. "We had teams from as far away as Red Creek and Batavia, and a lot of Allegany County and Steuben County teams as well. It's always a fast-paced day of these kids putting their hearts on the mats and giving it their all. It's amazing to see so much talent in one day."

Keshequa competed in Division IV, where they took the top honors over Canisteo-Greenwood, who placed second. The Lady Redskins would go on to earn the judges award for Best Moves in the competition. Penn Yan and Red Creek rounded off the Division IV slate.

Division I started out the afternoon with three teams competing for the top spot. In the end, it was Honeoye that came out top with the Division championship, over Hammondsport and Whitesville. In Division II action, four Allegany County teams found themselves pitted against one another, with defending County champion Fillmore taking the No. 1 spot.

The Fillmore Lady Eagles went on to collect the Best Choreography award to go with their Division II championship, with Bolivar-Richburg, Belfast and Genesee Valley rounding off the top four. In Division III, Batavia came out on top with the gold over Geneseo and Cuba-Rushford.

In the Division V co-ed division, Addison finished the day’s festivities with the championship over Haverling. Earlier in the day, the Haverling JV team was crowned Grand Champions with a score of 69.95.
