DANSVILLE — Dansville/Keshequa and Hornell were tied late in their wrestling match Wednesday evening, but the Red Raiders ended the match with three straight pins in order to grab the 51-33 road win in Dansville.

“We were preaching to the kids that (Dansville/Keshequa) has had some really tough matches against Livonia and Avon, and they took second place at Arkport. We knew that this wasn’t going to be an easy match by any means, and it wasn’t,” said HHS coach Bill Drake.

With the score tied at 33-33 in a back-and-forth affair, Hornell got two incredible matches out of Owen Lautner and Patrick Robards who each got a reversal that eventually worked into a pin that essentially ended the match.

Lautner took a 2-1 lead after the first period, and then battled in the second for a minute and a half before working a great reversal right into a pin in order to give Hornell the 39-33 lead. Robards used almost all three round of his match, getting a big reversal late in the third before using a final takedown to get the pin with just 33 seconds left in the match.

“I can’t even really express how important those were two for us tonight,” said Drake. “Things were looking shady for a while because their best wrestlers were coming up against our rookies, but those guys never quit. But the turning point of the match tonight was definitely with those two guys. They stepped up huge and we needed it to pull the win off.”

The last match of the evening was a formality, but Brennen Demersman put things away with authority when he got one final pin in just 1:38.

Hornell took an early lead with a forfeit and a quick pin from veteran Owen House. But Dansville quickly tied things up with a pair of pins from Michael Adams and Levi Howe.

Andrew Deebs put Hornell back up 15-12 with a 11-6 decision, but then Dansville took back the lead with a pin from Josh Blackman and a 10-3 decision from Karam Ali.

Alex Lockwood earned a huge pin with just 16.7 left in the first round of the 285-lb class in order to tie things up, and then the teams traded forfeits and Mason Drew earned a Hornell pin to bring the score to 33-33, setting up Robards and Lautner to finish off the win.

“The effort is what I’m most proud of tonight. We got the win so that makes me happy, but having this effort wasn’t necessarily the case when we started in Avoca. When guys would go to their backs, they would give up. But now, you can see our guys fighting until its all over. That’s the mentality that we are trying to instill, and it’s going to pay off huge for us later in the season,” said Drake. “I’m proud of these guys.”
