WELLSVILLE - With players showing up just before warmups decked out in Homecoming orange and black and face-paint, the Wellsville volleyball team managed to pull out a four-set victory over Wayland-Cohocton, 25-16, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-13.
"We moved our start time earlier so the kids from both teams could see the Homecoming football game, then weather forced the float parade to Friday," said Wellsville coach John Anderson. "They had a blast on the floats and they played spirited volleyball against a team we struggled with last year."
Freshman Kaylee Coleman had 12 kills, three aces and two blocks for Wellsville (5-5) while freshman Marley Adams (five aces, eight digs) and Ellie Davis (four aces, 16 service points, two blocks) each had nine kills. Setters Mattie Buckley and Delayne Mattison had 13 and 11 assists respectively.
Also for Wellsville, Na'Kaiha Dieter (block), Calla Cook (two aces) and Grace Emerson had two kills while libero Keara Ludu had 18 digs and two kills.
For Wayland-Cohocton, Kim Gascon had eight kills, four digs and four assists.
"We had a starter go out with an injury and senior Gabby Sorochin started and then the rest of the seniors kept making plays which helped set the tone of some outstanding hitting," said Anderson.
Wellsville will now take on Genesee Valley at home on Tuesday.
