BATH — When was the last time that a Dansville football team ventured into the "Steuben County Seat" and came home with a win over Bath-Haverling?
Good question. Well, the answer now is Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018. Yes, the Dansville Mustangs have opened the high school football campaign at 2-0 as they headed into the Southern Tier and came home with a 20-12 ripping of the Rams in Week 2 action Saturday night.
Coach Rich Welch noted, "These guys worked hard here tonight and earned this victory. Our defense really stepped up when we really needed it late in the game. It was certainly a team victory for sure!"
Dansville got on the board first after a short punt in Rams territory. The horses snapped the ball three times and were in the end zone as Trevor Shotwell did the honors on an 18 yard touchdown run, putting the visitors up 6-0. It looked like the Mustangs would be on their way to another score when a long pass play put Dansville in the red zone. The Rams "D" stepped it up, stopping Dansville on Bath's own 13 yard line.
Coach Wayne Carroll's club utilized the defensive momentum and turned it into offense as the navy & white pushed the ball downfield inside the Dansville 15 where they fumbled, with the ball going out of the back of the end zone for a touchback as the red & black dodged a bullet on that drive.
On Bath's next possession very late in the half, the Rams fumbled the football again and Dansville's John Wilkinson fell on it with just :20 seconds left to play in the second quarter. Dansville pulled some razzle-dazzle with a "hook & ladder" play as quarterback Dylan Race fired to Austin Simpson, who flipped it to Brody Stone who ran 14 yards for the score. Dansville converted the conversion on a 2-point pass play from Dylan Race to Logan Young making it a 14-0 lead at the half.
The Rams came out hungry and put together a quick 11-play, 78 yard drive that was capped by a Kaden Adams 2-yard touchdown run slicing into Dansville's lead to 14-6. The Mustang defense stopped Bath and took possession of the ball at the Rams 37 yard line. The very next play from scrimmage saw lightning strike, as Trevor Shotwell broke free on a 63 yard touchdown run pushing Dansville's lead to 20-6.
Bath would come right back with a 40 yard, 7 -play drive of their own as Cornell Galvan crossed the goal line on a TD run that put the home team back in striking distance at 20-12. The rest of this contest would be controlled by defense.
Welch stated, "Our defense stopped them on every drive in the 4th quarter. They really stepped it up when we needed it."
Dylan Race went 7-of-11 passing for 161 yards and a TD. Trevor Shotwell had six carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Brody Stone had one carry for 14 yards. Tanner Dettman had a reception for 73 yards, while Stone had two receptions for 46 yards and a score. Austin Simpson had one catch for 25 yards.
