CORNING - Corning Community YMCA launched its new Les Mills BodyPump classes on Saturday with two sold-out sessions of over 30 people, becoming the only area facility in the Southern Tier to offer certified Les Mills Classes.

BodyPump is a barbell-based class that aims to strengthen the entire body. This 60-minute workout challenges all major muscle groups by using weight-room exercises like squats, presses, lifts and curls. In one class, a participant could be doing up to 1,000 repetitions.

"It's fatiguing the muscles through the amount of reps as opposed to the amount of weight," said Sarra Robinson, a certified Les Mills trainer. "It's really great training. The BodyPump class is really good for people that want to increase their strength, but don't want to necessarily increase their size."

Those interested can take the class at the YMCA without being a member for $10, which also allows use of the facility for the entire day. Classes are started and sign-ups are available now. Classes are Monday and Wednesday at 5:45 a.m. and 9 a.m. with more time slots planned.

"I first tried body pump when I lived in Knoxville, Tenn., and I loved it," said Jenelle Glover, a non-member who is a resident of Corning. "When I saw they were offering this class that was open to the community, I was thrilled. I think it's a really unique class, you can have as much or as little weight as you want. If you need to modify the weight or back off, it's ok."

The YMCA looks to attract any person who'd like to give it a try, regardless of physical ability, age or gender.

"We looked in to it, and just felt like this was a natural next step for us to add some variety to our programming," YMCA health and wellness director Bonnie Mann said. "To have something different, that nobody else offers, lets us stand out and gives us something that will appeal to both men and women of all age groups."
