Hornell residents owe a debt of gratitude to Mayor Shawn Hogan and Sen. Chuck Schumer who worked so hard to secure the Amtrak high speed rail contract for Alstom. Sen. Schumer tirelessly advocated for our people, rightly proclaiming that our Southern Tier workforce ranks among the best in the world. Vice President Biden then stepped up to secure the financing that allowed Amtrak to buy the engines. Alstom workers earned that contract, but Sen. Schumer and Vice President Biden demonstrated how government can help create conditions to help local manufacturers flourish.

Unfortunately, both State Sen. Tom O’Mara and Congressman Tom Reed were missing in action, while Sen. Schumer was working so hard to secure that contract. Government doesn’t create jobs, but we do need political leaders who are willing to work hard for our manufacturing industries here in Hornell. That is why I am voting for Leslie Danks Burke for State Senator in the NY 58th Senate District and for John Plumb in the 23rd Congressional District. They will work like Sen. Schumer does to foster a brighter business climate here in the Southern Tier, not simply show up for photo ops after another politician does the hard work.
