Legislators say funding supports local first responders

ALBANY — Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced $45 million in funding awarded to 57 counties and New York City to enhance emergency communications across the state.

This funding enables local governments to expand emergency response capabilities and enhance overall public safety operations. The 2019 Statewide Interoperable Communications Grant program supports nine Regional Communications Consortiums, which focus on improving critical emergency communications across the state, as well as coordination between counties, state and federal agencies.

– Steuben County, $796,257

– Allegany County, $775,128

– Livingston County, $652,651

"Emergency communication systems are crucial to ensuring the safety of every New Yorker, and we're always looking for the latest technology to transmit information fast in a time of crisis," Governor Cuomo said. "This funding will enhance communication networks across the state and ensure that municipalities have the resources needed to improve emergency systems and operate efficiently."

In a joint statement, State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C,I-Big Flats), Assemblyman Chris Friend (R,C,I-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) said, “These timely and important public safety and emergency response grants should make a great difference to local emergency response teams. Emergency preparedness, response and recovery are fundamental government responsibilities.”

Counties throughout New York State utilize the funding to undertake infrastructure, equipment and technology upgrades. The assistance is part of the latest round of funding through the Statewide Interoperable Communications Grant program, a competitive grant program supporting regional communications partnerships throughout New York.

The state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services administers the program. To date, the state has awarded more than $500 million for interoperable radio communications and emergency services dispatching services.
