Effort will debut during Homecoming Parade Friday

DANSVILLE — The Dansville Class of 2020 has decided to create a toy drive to help less fortunate children in the area.

Hannea Milliman, DHS Class of 2020 vice president, said the wagon used for the toy drive will be presented at the Homecoming Parade on Friday, Oct. 4. The Dansville Homecoming is Toy Story-themed this year. The Class of 2020 float will be a sensation with characters from the famous cartoon franchise being represented. Milliman said she is looking forward to being Barbie.

“People can bring new unwrapped toys to put in the wagon for needy children. This is all part of Project Christmas, and it will go to help children in our area. We wanted to do a project that would give back to our community,” she said. “We want to leave something behind of our time here that everyone will remember. We started working on this Homecoming Project in the summertime.”

Milliman added that her mother, Christa Milliman, is helping with working on the float this year. There will be lots of participation with children being different characters from the cartoon.

Milliman said that money gathered from Class of 2020 will go to help the Joan Flender Foundation as well.

“Her foundation is a big part of what we all believe in, so we wanted to help out them as well. Our advisor Ms. (Kim) Derrenbacher gives us ideas for huge community projects,” she said. “We are going to gather toys for the drive until the end of November. Anyone interested can bring the toys to the school and give them to Ms. Derrenbacher for the Class of 2020 Project.”

Milliman said she is proud of her class for making a huge difference in the community.

“I am so proud because we are leaving a legacy behind,” she said. “I love to give back. It is who I am.”

The Class of 2020 is going to be at Tops again this November to ring the bell. Milliman said they enjoyed helping with the Salvation Army campaign last year.

Milliman plans to go to Nazareth College to study Social Work and minor in Dance. Her future plans are to move to New York City and open her own dance studio.
