We've all seen the videos of brazen thieves stealing packages from doorsteps.

Deliveries from Amazon and other firms have become a popular target for so-called porch pirates.

Now, one state is doing something about it.

Starting Sept. 1, stealing mail, such as packages, becomes a felony offense in Texas, according to Houston TV station KHOU. That means serious jail time for thieves — anywhere from six months to 10 years.

Accompanying fines can go as high as $10,000.

"Amazon is a huge fan of the new law, to say the least," the Fulshear, Texas, Police Department wrote in a recent Facebook post.

Fulshear police say charges can be upgraded in certain cases, such as those involving identity theft or when the victims are elderly or disabled.
