Nature-inspired playground opening at Al Lorenz Park

MOUNT MORRIS — All are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday at 11:30 a.m. for a new nature inspired playground at the Livingston County-owned Al Lorenz Park, located on Murray Hill in the Village of Mount Morris.

Youth from the Mount Morris Summer Recreation Program will join the celebration and have an opportunity to enjoy the new park feature.

The playground is meant to enable children to play together without physical or social barriers. It will have age-appropriate areas for younger children, ages 2 to 5 years, and an additional space for older children, ages 5 to 12 years. Components will include:

• Multiple climbing elements

• Single, double, tube and wave slides

• Suspension bridges

• A swing set featuring belt and buckle swings

• Several ground level elements, including a tic-tac-toe panel

Given the significant variety in children’s abilities and preferences, the playground equipment also features two transfer stations that will provide an easy transition for all users to the elevated components.

The new playground at the 80-acre Al Lorenz Park is one of many recreational features identified in a recent county-led park improvements study geared toward the promotion of healthy, active lifestyles. Other recommended features include a fitness trail, basketball court, and playing field with a backstop.

William Mann, Deputy County Administrator for Operations and Central Services, said, “Al Lorenz Park is a true gem among the region’s parkland. We are excited to advance and improve this public space for all to enjoy.”

Additionally, Mann said, “One of our major goals with the new playground is to make sure it is fun for all participants. This new play environment is designed to serve the physical, social and cognitive needs of children of all abilities. It will provide an opportunity for kids to develop their creativity, work in groups, build their confidence, and interact with the world around them.”

At its July 10 meeting, the Livingston County Board of Supervisors approved a $57,431 contract with Bears Management Group, Inc. to construct and install the new cedar log playground. Funds for the project are allocated in the county’s Capital Improvement Program.

David LeFeber, Town of Avon Supervisor and Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, said, “We are pleased to unveil this new playground that will serve generations of children to come. Every child should be able to enjoy a playground and participate in enriching experiences with friends, family and neighbors. Continued improvements to Al Lorenz Park will promote our county’s quality of life as well as healthy, outdoor activities for all.”
