Chamber of Commerce sponsoring July 29 meeting

DANSVILLE — The Dansville Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a one-hour session entitled, “Retail Revitalization: How Pop Up Shops Can Bolster Your Business and Energize the Economy,” on July 29 from 6–7 p.m. at Battle Street Brewery, 4 Battle Street, Dansville.

The facilitator is Dr. Nicole Alioto, Owner of Alla Breve Educational Consulting and Board President of Dansville ArtWorks, a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization located on Main Street in Dansville.

This session explores how pop up shops frequently serve as business incubators and allow entrepreneurs to test out their concept or experience a different market.

“Dansville ArtWorks began its retail initiative with a pop up store in December of 2014,” says Alioto. “It allowed the Board to learn if there was a need in the community and get feedback as to what the community wanted.”

Dansville ArtWorks learned that people wanted to see a Main Street storefront, and fast forward to this fall, ArtWorks will start its fifth year on Main Street.

Pop ups are also used to revitalize neighborhood and spark the local economy. According to an article on, a large-scale pop-up effort in the south “helped more than nine business launches, while six turned into long-term leases.” On July 29, Alioto will share more about ArtWorks’ journey and discuss a similar pop up implementation concept for Dansville.

“Dansville has a lot of visitors during the holiday season, so the large-scale pop-up effort would capitalize on it,” Alioto stated.

The discussion will include what the project might look like and what the business and property owners would do, and how they would benefit.

If someone is a home based business, perhaps part of a group of crafter or retailers, or has a retail business idea; if someone is a retailer in another area and wants to test the Dansville market; if someone is a Dansville property owner, manager, or realtor; or if someone is interested in economic development, this discussion is for you. If you plan to attend, RSVP by July 26 to Light refreshments will be served, and a cash bar is available. All attendees will be entered to win a $50 Amazon gift card.
