SPRINGWATER — A Springwater man perished in a July 4 accident, Livingston County Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reported Monday.

On Thursday, July 4 at approximately 1:55 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a call for a two-car motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Carney Hollow Road and Mead Hill Road. It was reported that one person was trapped in the vehicle and possibly unresponsive.

Emergency personnel from the Sheriff’s Office, Springwater Fire Department, Wayland Fire Department, Livingston County EMS, and LifeNet Air Medical Services were dispatched to the scene.

The investigation of the crash revealed that John J. Lense Jr., 79, of Springwater, was driving his Mazda pickup westbound on Mead Hill Road and pulled on to Carney Hollow Road into the path of a Chevrolet pickup being driven by Gordon C. Willis, 67, from Springwater. After the vehicles collided, Lense’s pickup struck a telephone pole before coming to rest.

Willis was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Lense was transported to Noyes Memorial Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased.

The crash was investigated by members of the Sheriff’s Office Command Staff, Criminal Investigations Division, Patrol Services Division, Forensic Identification Unit, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Unit.
