WAYLAND — A young athlete is asking the community to help him with a chance of a lifetime.

Wayland-Cohocton senior Jamil Horner won a chance to compete at the USA National Track and Field Competition in Australia. Right now the teen is reaching out for sponsors and donations to be made so he can go on the trip. Horner needs to raise $4,700 by May 15 in order to go on the trip. The 10 day adventure is July 7 to 17.

“He has a chance to compete in a national competition, which is a dream come true,” Glenn Eaton, Horner’s stepfather said. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for him that he can’t miss.”

Horner has come so close to beating the school track record by just one second. He has trained every summer since he was in eight grade. Horner will run up to 15 miles a day in the summertime.

“He has sponsor papers that businesses can fill out that are willing to sponsor him, and he needs to raise the money in time to go,” Eaton said. “He wants to get this kind of experience and meet national scouts.”

Right now the family is selling shirts for $25. There is a special donation draw that if you win you get to go on the trip with him, and you get a trip for two.

There is a Go Fund Me page set up as well called Jamil Trip to Australia https://www.gofundme.com/jamil-trip-to-australia where you can make a donation. The family is working on holding a spaghetti benefit sometime next month.
