DANSVILLE — Last year was a very busy for the volunteers of the Dansville Ambulance Company.

There where 1,363 calls for service in 2018, of which 1,315 of the calls where covered by the agency, resulting in a coverage rate of 97.4 percent. Dansville is one of the top three busiest agencies in Livingston County. That is 3.75 calls per day! All with less than 50 active members.

In addition to the emergency calls, all home football games have a crew standing by — Varsity, JV, Modified and Youth league. Graduation and the Dogwood parade also have a crew(s).

For The Union Hose Tractor Pull, the agencies MCI trailer and gator as well as 6-8 drivers and medics and one ambulance are dedicated for the duration of the event.

The big one is the New York State Festival of Balloons! Starting with the “glow” on Thursday night, 6-8 members, one ambulance and Gator are on hand until the end. The festival supplies a “big top” tent, in which a full treatment area is set up. One ambulance, the Gator and MCI trailer, as well as 6-10 members are on site from 4 p.m.-close on Friday night, 10 a.m. – close on Saturday and Sunday. Probably 200 personnel hours from Dansville EMS staff alone. Livingston County provides ALS techs and a doctor is also on staff for Saturday and Sunday. A couple of crews split the weekend covering the district with the primary ambulance.

Last year was filled with highs and lows. The agency celebrated 50 years of serving the community. An open house was held in September. Several charter members, retired members and officers joined in the celebration that was open to the public. A new ambulance was also purchased by the village and placed in service during the summer. The agency was also saddened by the sudden loss of active EMT Kathy Harter.

As always, we welcome anyone who has the desire to serve the community, and join our ranks. All training is provided, in house, and EMT classes are held at our base at 18 Ossian St.

Some people go through life wondering if they have made a difference, others know they have! Won’t you join those who know?
