HORNELLSVILLE — A Corning woman was killed in a late night accident on Wednesday.

Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, the Steuben County Sheriff's Office responded to a single vehicle accident in the Town of Hornellsville.

Authorities say that a pickup truck of unknown make and model was being driven by Connie Kraft, 54, of Corning, when it was spotted going the wrong way on Interstate 86, traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes.

Witnesses, as well as a subsequent investigation and reconstruction of the crash scene verified that Kraft was in the wrong lane.

According to police, the vehicle apparently got on Interstate 86 at the Howard exit, passing several other motorists. When it came to the Hornell/Arkport exits, the vehicle struck a concrete construction barrier.

The car rolled several times, before coming to rest on the driver's side, atop the Interstate 86 overpass above state Route 36.

A motorist traveling towards Alfred in the opposite, eastbound lane called it "a horrific crash".

Kraft was found to be the lone occupant of the vehicle.

First responders said that Kraft was alive, but not responsive at the scene. She was said to have suffered severe injuries in the crash, and was transported by Hornell ambulance to UR St. James Hospital in Hornell, where she was pronounced dead.

Also responding to the scene were North Hornell and Arkport Fire Departments.

The circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation.
