DANSVILLE — The community mourns the loss of a mentor, friend, and educator.
Albert “Al” William Hawk passed away at the age of 88 on Oct, 15 at Noyes Memorial Hospital following an illness. He was born a native Dansville son on July 23, 1930. He married his sweetheart, Janice May, on April 21, 1951. Together they had three children.
Hawk went on to change his part of the world one incredible act at a time. He worked mostly with people suffering from developmental disabilities in what was known as The Craig Colony or Craig Developmental Center.
Hawk served on many school boards, including as a member and President of the Dansville School Board, board member and President of the NYS School Boards Association, the Rural School Boards Association of NYS, and the Genesee Valley BOCES Board. He was very active in many clubs and organizations. He was a member and past president of the Dansville Historical Society, a member of the Loyal Order Of Moose, and a charter member of the Toy Train Collectors Society. He was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, serving on the church council as member and President, and he took care of the grounds for over 40 years. He once testified in front of the US Supreme Court to not allow public funding to be used for a private school. Al was a terrific advocate for the community and the state.

“Al Hawk, an iconic figure in local, regional and state education passed away on Oct. 15 at the age of 88. Al was staunch advocate for rural public education and the BOCES education system,” he said. “Al was an extraordinary educational leader and he was inducted into the Dansville Wall of Pride in October 2015.”
