GROVELAND — The famous American Rock Salt Company is looking to make a big positive change in the area.
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation is the SEQR lead agency on this project, and has accepted a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for this project. There will be a public hearing about this project on Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. Written comments on the complete application and DEIS will be accepted until Aug. 27.
The project description from American Rock Salt Company includes the following: They propose an expansion of a currently-permitted mine comprised of approximately 9,000 acres of underground reserves, located in the towns of Groveland and Geneseo.
As proposed, the expansion would include approximately 1,700-plus additional acres of underground reserves located west of the existing mine in the towns of Mount Morris and Leicester. In addition, an alternate/additional room and pillar mine design is proposed to improve the operational performance within the mine workings, while maintaining the currently permitted room and pillar mine design, and 60 percent or less salt extraction ratio. According to the application, no modifications to the surface components or operations of the mine are proposed, nor are any necessary for the proposed underground expansion.
Genesee Country Express reached out to learn more about the project, and what it will mean for our area.
NYS DEC Public Relations Specialist Regina Willis put together some background on the project.
“The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued a combined Notice of Complete Application, Acceptance and Availability of a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (Draft EIS), and Notice of Hearing for the Hampton Corners Mine Underground Expansion, Livingston County,” she said. “The complete application and Draft EIS is available for public review and DEC is accepting written comments on these documents until Aug. 27.
"In addition, DEC is holding a legislative public hearing to allow the public to submit oral comments on the permit application and Draft EIS. This hearing will take place at 6 p.m. on Aug. 15, at the Livingston County Building 1 Conference Center, 1 Murray Hill Drive, Mt Morris. DEC will also accept written comments at the hearing. Written and oral comments receive equal consideration; it is not necessary to attend the hearing to submit a comment.”
