Sheriff: Judith Gillis was checking her mailbox on Richmond Mills Road when she was struck by van

LIVONIA — A Livonia woman lost her life when she was struck by a vehicle while checking for her mail on Monday. 

Livingston County Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty said the motor vehicle collision took the life of Judith Gillis, 59.

At about 5:40 p.m., Monday, the Livingston County Emergency Communications Center (E-911) received calls for a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle on Richmond Mills Road, near Center Street, in the Town of Livonia.

Deputies, along with Fire and EMS, were immediately dispatched to the scene. Deputies arrived on scene and observed a utility van had struck a pedestrian, as well as a mailbox and a utility pole before stopping.

Witnesses and arriving emergency personnel began life saving procedures, however, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The preliminary investigation into the collision revealed that the van was being operated by Jaden M. Miller, 32, of Phelps, N.Y., and had been traveling east on Richmond Mills Road when he crossed the center line and drove off the north shoulder of the roadway. The van then struck Gillis, who was walking out to check the mail at her roadside mailbox with her dog. The van then struck a utility pole before coming to rest in a church parking lot on Center Street.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

The collision was investigated by the Sheriff’s Office Command Staff, Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, and Forensic Identification Unit (FIU).

The Livonia Fire Department, Livonia EMS, and Livonia ALS were on scene rendering aid and assistance, as well as the District Attorney Office and County Coroner’s Office.
