Sheriff: Eugene N. Smith ran over stop sign with dump truck

LIMA — The Livingston County Sheriff's office arrested a Rochester man on felony charges after an investigation into a dump truck running over a stop sign.

On Oct. 5, deputies responded to the intersection of Dalton Road and Heath Markham Road in the Town of Lima to investigate an incident where a dump truck ran over a stop sign and then left the scene. Personnel received an accurate description of the dump truck and recovered other evidence from the scene, authorities saqy. A deputy sheriff then went to a gravel pit on Honeoye Falls Road 6, where he located the truck. The driver was identified as 68-year-old Eugene N. Smith of Rochester.

It was further discovered that Smith was operating the truck with a suspended license. In fact, Smith's license was suspended 47 times (44 scoffs on 22 different dates), the sheriff's department said.

Smith was charged with the felony, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Smith was later arraigned in the Town of West Sparta Court and remanded to the custody of the sheriff on $1,000 cash bail or $2,000 bond.
