DANSVILLE — The painting classes at Dansville Artworks are a huge hit with the locals.
Melissa Gartz teaches a painting class once a month at the main street art gallery.
This month they painted butterflies on June 10 from 6 to 9 p.m.
“Butterflies are good for practice,” Gartz said. “They can be any color and it allows you to work on blending.”
Part of the challenge when it comes to painting is the drawing itself, so Gartz said she makes it easier for them by transferring the image to canvas.
“We like to do something different every month so that people come back,” she said. “Painting parties are very popular in the city, so I thought it would be good to bring them here.”
The biggest painting party so far was the one held on Valentine’s Day for couples. There were six couples who attended and had a lot of fun.
“It is wonderful to see what people come up with,” Gartz said. “They are very creative and can make something terrific. It doesn’t have to turn out a certain way. It can be whatever you want.”
This was Gartz’s fifth painting class. She loves when people keep coming back, and that is the case for Dansville United Methodist Church Pastor Manilla Owen and her son Brantley.
“I like to come to these workshops,” she said. “It is not as much fun to do it at home. I like to be creative.”
Owen has taken classes at Hobby Lobby and dida wine glass painting class to raise money for the American Cancer Society before.
“I love Dansville Artworks,” she said. “I will be coming back.”
The next class will be July 8 from 6 until 8:30 p.m. Gartz thinks she will have everyone paint a sunset over the lake. The cost is $30 per person, and everything is provided by Dansville Artworks.
