DANSVILLE — The Soccer programs at Dansville believe in giving back to the community. This year has been no exception. Three of the standards that we try and uphold in our high school are “Courage, Honor, and Commitment.”
Every year the soccer teams pick a charity to raise money for based on a decision made by the coaches. In the past we have raised money for the Cancer Society, Lupus foundation, and last year for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. We have also raised the money and traveled to Nicaragua to build a house. I am estimating that we have donated and raised over 15,000 dollars as a program in the last few years. Each Charity has been chosen for a reason.
We had two students that graduated last year and are going to be in the military. We wanted to honor them and show them that we are proud of the decisions they have made.
So, we picked the ( http://www.adaptivecanoeing.org/programs/warfighter-sports-events/) Warfighter sports event that included racing outrigger canoes with the Wounded veterans that are recovering and getting involved in the sports world and this venue brings in warriors from all over the country to participate.
Our students not only raised the money so that these servicemen and women could participate but they were actual participants themselves, racing with and against them. On September 19, 50 students and coaches traveled to the Genesee Valley waterways to meet and race outrigger canoes for the day. They met the veterans that the money raised is helping and got a chance to thank them for their service. It was a fun filled and fulfilling day for the students and they were rewarded by heartfelt thanks and satisfaction of a job well done. This is a link to the website where you can find out more information about the outrigger canoe racing and also if you wanted to volunteer time to the organization. http://www.adaptivecanoeing.org/
