Forbes Leroy Tenbrock, age 89, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at Absolute of Houghton.

Forbes Leroy Tenbrock, age 89, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at Absolute of Houghton.

Forbes was born Dec. 23, 1921, in Wayland, the son of Leroy and Helen (Rosenkrans) Tenbrook. He was a graduate of Wayland High School and attended Rochester School of Commerce. He served three years in the U.S. Army Air Force, including two years with the 385th Bomb Group in England. Forbes married Evelyn Jacobs on May 12, 1943, in Springwater; she predeceased him on March 6, 2009. Forbes became the owner and operator of Rogers & Tenbrcok Lumber Yard in Wayland, and after faithfully serving the public for more than 40 years, retired in 1985.

Forbes was a member of the Theodore Van Tassel American Legion Post No. 402 in Wayland and the 385th Bomb Group Memorial Association. He followed his forefathers by participating in community affairs. He joined the Wayland Fire Department in 1941 and was an active member; serving as fire chief from 1948 to 1952. An assistant fire chief for many years, he was also a member of the fire department’s ambulance corps and served on the Steuben County Fire Advisory Board. He received the 1980 Steuben County Fireman’s Association Special Recognition Award and was named Fireman of the Year in 1981. Forbes was a member of the Tri-County Board for 16 years, serving as president for four years, at which time he was instrumental in the building of the present medical center in Wayland. He was a member and past president for 15 years of the Wayland Cemetery Association. He participated in Meals on Wheels Program from Noyes Hospital. In 1997, he received the Good Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America. Forbes was very active in the formation of the Wayland Historical Society, where he served for many years on the board of directors and contributed many hours of work and historical details of Wayland’s history.

Forbes enjoyed a lifetime of fishing and hunting, but most of all he loved traveling with Evelyn and spending time with his daughter and grandchildren.

Forbes is survived by his daughter Ann (James) Owens of Lake Forest, Calif.; three grandchildren, Christine (Sean) Wilson of Clovis, Calif.; Kelly (Rick) Galasieski of Mission Viejo, Calif.; and Danielle (Rick) Crawford of Oakland, Calif.; six great grandchildren, Chandler, Taylor, R.J., Brooke, Olivia and Julia; sister, Lois Lasher of Wayland; and two nephews.

Friends may call 2–4 and 6–7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 300 West Naples St., Wayland, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the Village Cemetery, Wayland.
