Joseph. L. Meyer Sr., 81, passed away Wednesday morning, Dec. 15, 2010, at St. James Mercycare in Hornell.

Joseph. L. Meyer Sr., 81, passed away Wednesday morning, Dec. 15, 2010, at St. James Mercycare in Hornell.


Joe was born Aug. 29, 1929, in Hicksville, the son of Nicholas and Edith (Tierney). He grew up on Long Island, moved to the Wayland area in the mid 1940s and served his country in Korea in the mid-1950s. Joe and Phyllis (Gozelski) were married June 21, 1958, and together have celebrated over 52 years of marriage.


Joe was self-employed during his entire career and dedicated himself to building what has evolved into Joseph L. Meyer and Sons. Inc. — farming operations in Steuben County. Joe has been a communicant of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church his entire time in Wayland and he achieved Fourth Degree Knight within the Knights of Columbus and served.


Joe is predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Edith Meyer; sister, Elizabeth Meyer; and brother, Nicholas Meyer Jr. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Meyer of Wayland; children, Joseph Jr. (Mary) Meyer, John (Lisah) Meyer, Melanie “Dee Dee" Kuhn, Melissa Meyer, all of Wayland; René (Gary) North of Sarasota, Fla.; and Kristen Meyer of Ashburn, Va.; grandchildren, Rachel, Joseph III, Ashley, John “Nick” and Brian Meyer; Jerry, Morgan and Ryan Kuhn; Zachary and Benjamin North; sisters, Theresa Primmer of Ontario, N.Y.; and Rita (Dan) Rose of Atlanta, Ga.; along with several nieces and nephews.


Joe’s family and friends called 1-4 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Prayer service was at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home followed by his Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Wayland. Memorial contributions in Joseph L.
