The second annual Sunshine Softball Game on Sunday sponsored by the Dansville Rotary Club lived up to its name.

One year ago it was a very rainy and wet scene, but here in 2012 the sun shone and the temperature was in the upper 80s — typical softball weather. The game is played annually to give special needs children in the area a chance to experience the national pastime in a unique way. Each player has a buddy from the Dansville varsity baseball or softball team to guide them during the contest.

This year 22 athletes were featured in the game as half of the roster played for the Black All-Stars coached by Lori Tyler and Ken Mountzouros and the others were part of the Red team headed up by Heather Pero and Sean Race. The umpires for the game were Jim McLaughlin and Dr. Richard Churkis.

Event coordinator Jennifer Brushafer noted simply, “It’s all about the kids.”

Players were given commemorative game T-shirts with their name and a number on them, along with team caps, while pictures were taken. The Dansville High School band under the direction of Pam Mark performed the national anthem while the American Legion Honor Guard presented the colors. Team mascots Cutter and Slider were there cheering the athletes on while fans offered their support as well. T-shirts and water bottles were given away to the loudest crowd. Former major leaguer Dave Butters of the Pittsburgh Pirates threw out the ceremonial first pitch to catcher Kaleb Kenney.

The rules were perfectly simple: they played three innings. Everyone batted and played the field each inning. There were no outs. Each player hit from a batting tee and official score was kept. Everybody played and everybody won.

Inning ending homers were hit by Colby Sharp, Christian Young and Kaleb Kenney for the Black All-Stars. Miranda Rowley, Ramond Young and Emily Brushafer turned the trick for the Red All-Stars.
