  • Wayland town and village officials picked commissioners Tuesday night for two fire districts that are expected to begin operation in two weeks.
The fire commissioners for the northern fire district, including the village of Wayland, were selected for staggered terms based on the number of votes each candidate received from the joint boards.
Town Clerk Natalie Baird and Attorney John Vogel tabluated the votes.
Jeff O’Neal was appointed for five years, Tim Costell for four years, Harmon Spencer for three years, Rocky Dean for two years and Rich Locke for one year. Reid Perkins was appointed as treasurer.
Following passage of a resolution for the joint fire district, Fire Chief Mike Cotter said, “I’m very happy.”
State law differs for selection of joint fire districts versus districts created by just a town. The commissioners for the southern district, including Loon Lake and Perkinsville, were all appointed for one year. Next year, all will be forced to run if they wish to retain their seats. The candidate who receives the most votes will take a five-year position. The candidate with the second-most will be seated for four years, and so on for all five commissioners.
The town board picked Larry Mehlenbacher, Dave Wallace, Sharon Mitchell, Ray Sellars and John Wagner as commissioners. The treasurer is Karen Monroe.
Both fire districts are expected to begin operation on Oct. 18, barring a permissive referendum that could halt the process.
