Baldwin accounts for 3 TDs for Wellsville

The Wellsville Lions want to make the most of this new opportunity and one win away from accomplishing that goal.

Dusty Baldwin threw a pair of touchdowns to Trystin Plummer and added a 33-yard touchdown run of his own as Wellsville coasted to a 33-0 win over Dansville in Thursday night’s opening round of the Class C?Connors &?Ferris Bowl.

“The goal here is to get a couple of wins and send the seniors out with their heads held high and build something for next year,” said Wellsville head coach Frank Brown. “The boys really came to play tonight on all sides of the ball.”

Wellsville (3-5) failed to qualify for sectionals one year after winning the program’s first-ever Section V title, losing five of its last six games. However, the Lions will now have a chance to capture the Connors &?Ferris Bowl championship for the third time in four years against either Marcus Whitman or University Prep next week at a time and site to be determined.

“It’s an opportunity to play another football game,” said Brown. “We’re going to work hard for the opportunity, so let’s get this thing done and get four wins and send the seniors out with a couple of wins and get our underclassmen some playing time like we did tonight and get ready for 2013.”

Baldwin finished 7-of-8 for 87 yards and also rushed four times for 60 yards. Wellsville rushed for 228 yards as 11 different players had at least one carry.

Nick Anderson led Wellsville with 62 yards and a touchdown on six carries and Plummer’s only receptions were those touchdowns and finished with 87 yards receiving.

“We had a couple of mismatches in certain formations that we wanted to take advantage of in man coverage,” said Brown. “Trystin ran great routes and Dusty put the ball exactly where he needed to.”

Zack Cunningham caught two passes for 42 yards for the Lions before leaving the game with a leg injury.

Wellsville also held Dansville (1-7) to only two yards net rushing and 74 yards of total offense. The Mustangs were short-handed with eight starters out due to injury, including quarterback Cody Schwan and fullback Evan Dieter.

“One of the things we’re going to focus on in this off-season is not just becoming a better football team, but also becoming better, more responsible people,” said Dansville first-year head coach Terry Conway. “You’ve got to start thinking like winners. It’s been too long in Dansville.

“I started coaching in 1985 and we went to sectionals every year and back then we only took four teams to sectionals,” added Conway. “We were one of the top-four teams in Class?B all the time. I?don’t know what happened, the bottom fell out. We’ve struggled to get people out and struggled to get commitment and got used to losing, but we’ve got to change that.”

Tyler Campbell rushed for 42 yards on 13 carries, Gage Koch caught three passes for 70 yards, and Dustin Dieter had seven tackles for Dansville.

After a sloppy first quarter in which Wellsville fumbled two punts and Dansville missed a 30-yard field goal, Baldwin’s scramble down the right side early in the second quarter broke the scoreless tie.

Plummer then caught touchdowns of 35 and 52 yards to give Wellsville a 19-0 halftime lead. Anderson added a seven-yard touchdown in the third which came one play after his 22-yard run set up the score.

Later in the third, senior Trevor Jackson — normally a lineman — went in as a running back and scored his first varsity touchdown from five yards out to make it 33-0.

“I never got the ball before, but they handed it off to me and I ran as hard as I could,” said Jackson. “I was going to make it in there, one way or another. I?had no idea I was going to get the ball. They told me to go in at tailback and I went in there and ran.”

Tyler Brion and Chris Harris both had seven tackles and a sack and Brady Lewis added six tackles and a sack for the Lions. Wellsville finished with five sacks, as Bryce Hamlin and Craig Brown also had sacks.

“It’s one of those situations where we controlled the line of scrimmage all night long,” said Frank Brown.
