  • The family of fallen Cohocton native Sgt. Devin Snyder is planning a memorial motorcycle ride for next summer.
Spearheaded by Army veteran and Patriot Guard rider Dennis Weidman and his son Josh, the June 1 ride is set for approximately 100 miles, beginning in Cohocton and ending in Dansville.
A Dansville native, Weidman said he's known the Snyder family for a year, and that the run will help keep Devin Snyder's memory alive.
“It's not an easy thing to do,” he said of organizing the ride. “It's a lot of work, but in the long run, the effort will be well worth it.”
Snyder, a 2008 graduate of Wayland-Cohocton High School, joined the Army later that year. She was deployed to Afghanistan in mid-March 2011 and was killed in action on June 4 that year.
Weidman approached the family in March about the run, but they decided to push it back to 2013 in order to finalize planning.
A memorial dice run organized by the Cobras Motorcycle Club and the American Cohocton Legion was already held in Snyder's honor earlier this summer. The Snyder family said they appreciated the gesture, but wanted to be involved in events honoring their daughter.
“It's not that we're being unappreciative,” said Dineen Snyder. “I'm so glad that as many people came out and supported the event as they did. I don't want them to be misled into thinking that we're being unappreciative. That's not it at all.”
The 2013 run will go to establishing a new scholarship, with money going toward local police departments and a student pursuing a career in law enforcement.
“Devin wanted to go into law enforcement. That was her goal,” said Dineen Snyder. “She was actually studying to be a deception analyst.”
Aside from the date, plans for the run aren't finalized, but the Snyders and Weidman are hoping to have food vendors and bands in Dansville at the conclusion of the ride.
