  • After moving some games around with the near summer-like weather, Dansville opened their softball season on the road and early with an unusual March 22 start date at Oakfield–Alabama. The Hornets stung the Mustangs in extra innings coming from behind in the fifth inning and scoring the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Oakfield–Alabama posted a 3-2 victory in both teams’ 2012 openers.
A solo homer in the bottom of the first put Oakfield–Alabama on the board. Goose eggs were the name of the game over the next three innings with both teams’ pitchers taking control early.
Dansville gained the upper hand in the top half of the fifth when Brie Long doubled and came home on Billie Chappell’s RBI double. Some heads-up base-running by Chappell resulted in the go-ahead run. Chappell advanced to third on the throw to the plate. When a throwing error occurred, she sprinted home to give Dansville a 2-1 edge.
Oakfiled-Alabama scored the tying run in the bottom of the fifth when a two-out infield error opened the door for the Hornets. A single just out of the reach of rightfielder Kelsey Snyder managed to tie the contest up a 2-2.
Both pitchers went to work again hanging zeros on the board. Dansville threatened in the top of the seventh when Long singled and then stole both stole second and third, but found herself unable to score.
In the home eighth, Oakfield put a quick double and single together to plate the winning run.
Dansville struck out 18 times against O-A pitching, prompting Mustangs coach Gene Jackson to comment, “It’s early in the season, but you can’t do much with your baserunners unless you put the ball in play. We might have been able to pull this one out if we could have put the bat on the ball a little more. The girls worked hard and battled a good team here in their opener, so we’re still very optimistic heading into the remainder of the schedule.”
