  • Michael Murphy of Wayland has been named the 2013 Empire State Potato Growers Association Scholarship winner.
He will receive the award at the 2013 Empire Farm Days on Wednesday, Aug. 7 at the NY Ag Leadership Luncheon at Rodman Lott & Son Farms in Seneca Falls.

"Each year the Empire State Potato Growers scholarship honors a student with strong academic and leadership skills. Michael Murphy is already a young agricultural entrepreneur with his own potato and garlic sales. We are pleased to support his interest in pursuing higher education and a career in the agricultural industry," said ESPGA Scholarship Committee Chair Andrew Pryputniewicz.
Michael, a high honor roll student at Wayland-Cohocton Central School, has grown and sold fingerling potatoes and garlic for three years and has participated in potato seed evaluations with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County. He also has a herd of seven beef cows. His family owns and operates the 120-acre Murphy Brothers Farm.

Michael is a 12-year participant in 4-H and a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society. He plans to study Agricultural Science with a Business minor at Cornell University in the fall.
The ESPGA annually selects an undergraduate student residing in and attending college in NY to receive a $500 scholarship per academic year for up to four consecutive years of agricultural education.

The 2013 NY Ag Leadership Luncheon, sponsored by American Agriculturist magazine, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and Empire State Potato Growers, Inc. will include presentation of the the ESPGA Scholarship, the 2013 New York State Agricultural Environmental Management Award, an update of New York Farm Viability Institute projects, and a keynote speech by Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean Kathryn Boor.
