Stanley J. Titus, 92, passed away Friday, April 15, 2011, at Woodland Retirement Community in Farmville, Va.


Born May 24, 1918, in Glen Cove, he graduated in 1954 from Cornell University and moved to Dansville where he and his wife Dorothy lived for 28 years. He worked for Maloney Bros. Nursery and then for Kelly Brothers Nursery where he retired in 1982 as vice president.


While in Dansville, he was active in the Dansville Methodist Church, the Lions Club, and the Phoenix Lodge, A. and F.M. Stanley was a president of the Finger Lakes Nurserymen’s Association and the New York State Nurserymen’s Association. He represented New York on the Board of Governors of the American Association of Nurserymen. He was a member of the New York Agricultural Businessmen’s Council, the Horticultural Advisory Board at Alfred State College, and the horticultural advisory group for BOCES. He was also affiliated with the Garden Writers Association, Direct Mail Marketing Association, New England Mail Order Association, and the National Mail Order Nurserymen’s Association. Having served in World War II, he was active in the Army Reserves in Wayland and retired with rank of Major in 1968.


He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy O. Titus, and his brother F. Preston Titus of Alexandria, Va. He is survived by his children, Nancy (Jim) Helfrich of Dansville and Tim (Marsha) Titus of Cherry Hill, N.J.; by six grandchildren: Eric, Cory, and Kyle Helfrich; Tom Page; and Ben and Alex Titus; and by brothers Paul Titus of Texas and Calvin Titus of North Carolina.
