Before you know it the holidays will be upon us. With the blur of invitations from family and friends, special events and open houses, there is one holiday happening you won’t want to miss—touring the Loughran House at the Senate House State Historic Site.
Last year Friends of Senate House board members and volunteers spent countless hours decorating the stunning Victorian Italianate-style home and were able to open the home for the first time in decades for several special events. This year, the same group promises to outdo last year’s efforts and is looking for a little help.
The front room of the house will be decorated in a military theme and the volunteers are hoping to decorate the tree, the largest one in the house, with pictures of Ulster County’s veterans and active duty military. Volunteers will copy and mount the pictures as ornaments which will list the name of the service member, their branch and dates of service.
“We’d like to honor our veterans, both past and present, by dedicating one of the rooms in the house to them,” said Friends of Senate House president Christine Hein.
“We feel this is especially fitting,” Hein continued, “since the original builder of the home, Dr. Robert Loughran, served as a surgeon in the Civil War for the 120th New York Militia. Now all we need are pictures.”
Anyone who would like to have a picture of a living or deceased veteran or an active duty military member hung on the tree should send a JPEG image with the service member’s name, dates of service and military branch to or please mail a copy of the picture by no later than November 12, 2012 with the same information to: Friends of Senate House, P.O. Box 3503, Kingston NY 12402-3503.
The festively decorated Loughran House will be on view to the public for free on December 1, 8, and 15 from 11 AM to 3 PM. It will also be open for free on December 7 from 5 PM to 8 PM during Kingston’s annual Uptown Holiday Open House. Outside, chestnuts will be roasting and horse and buggy rides will be offered from the carriage house on the property.
Other special holiday offerings include a Champagne, Chocolate and Cheese reception hosted by Friends of Senate House for $20 a person on Monday, December 17 from 5 PM to 7 PM and programs for local schools. To arrange a school visit to the Loughran House or for information on any of the site’s holiday events, please contact 338-2786.
