  •   The Old Madrid restaurant and cocktail bar has been a staple of Dansville’s community for over 80 years.   In 1931 the Frati brothers opened what was then a new restaurant — the name Old Madrid was inspired by their Spanish heritage. This writer’s grandmother, Beth Kelly, used to stop in and dine there whenever her and her family passed through Dansville, when she was but 10 years old.   She said, “it was a real treat” and that “it hasn’t changed a bit”, and it seems both those statements are true today.   Today The Old Madrid is owned by Bill and Connie Stringer and managed by their son Billy, who went to RIT for environmental management.   “We feel we can fill a vacant niche that the town of Dansville needs”, Billy Stringer said about re-opening the Old Madrid.   With such delights as some Spanish and American entrees, pasta dishes, weekly rotating sandwiches and a tapas menu, to name a few. There are also daily drink specials, open Mondays, bring your own wine Wednesdays, Thursday night wings, and of course Friday night fish fry with two sizes available.   Billy Stringer described the fish as “sustainably caught Icelandic haddock, and we’re doing fish sandwiches for lunch on Fridays … we make it all from scratch including our French fries”   The dining room comfortably seats 60 people, and private parties are available for up to 40. The bar area is still very much the same though it might interest some bar-goers to know that management has installed a new lighting system, which means the bar will be dimmer.   Behind the bar is a luxurious parlor room with 12 relaxing leather lounge chairs. So whatever the occasion may be, whether it’s a quiet dinner with a loved one, a joyous celebration with your family, a drink with some friends, or a nice place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine, The Old Madrid will be at your service. According to managers, the restaurant is slated to open today, Dec. 13.
