  • There are many ways communities can honor its veterans, and with a new initiative through Livingston County Clerk’s Office, communities have one more way.
On July 2, participating businesses will launch a county-wide “Thank A Vet” discount program in conjunction with the clerk’s office.
Any veteran who has or places their discharge papers on file with the clerk's office can make use of the program. All they need to do is present identification to the clerk’s office, and they will check to make sure their DD214 papers are on file in Livingston County. Once confirmed, a discount card and list of participating businesses will soon be mailed to them.
The list of participating businesses will also be placed on the county clerk’s website, and a poster will be displayed in the businesses to proudly signify that they are participants.
“I’ve always wanted to do something for the veterans,” Livingston County Clerk Jim Culbertson said about the program, which he modelled after a “Return to Favor” program found in other counties.
“There’s always been a place in my heart for veterans,” he said. “To interrupt their lives to serve their country, this is just my small way to say thank you.”
There are about 20 participating businesses so far in the Dansville area, about 120 so far in Livingston County.
"This initiative by County Clerk Jim Culbertson will hopefully draw Livingston County veterans to the clerk's office," Livingston County Veterans Service Agency director Frank Hollister said.
"A veteran's DD-214 or Discharge is an extremely important document and can be used for federal, state and local benefits.  As the County Service Officer, I encourage all veterans to take advantage of this program and the benefits it offers. Thank you Jim for all your hard work."
To become a participating business, or for questions on the program, contact the county clerk’s office at 585-335-1712 or download a form at http://www.co.livingston.state.ny.us/departments.htm.
