Mark Hopkins, president of the Springwater Trails hiking group, sent the following story: This past Saturday, June 2, 13 hikers joined the Finger Lakes Trail Conference’s celebratory end-to-end hike. The hike celebrated National Trails Day and the 50th anniversary of the Finger Lakes Trail. Besides Mark, Georgia Binder walked the seven-mile hike with her daughter Laura, son-in-law Jeff VanKoevering, grandson Zac, and friend Ben Miller. It was great to be a part of this celebration which consisted of 75 simultaneous hikes that covered the entire 567.5-mile length of the Main Finger Lakes Trail. Although rain was predicted for Saturday, it was a beautiful day across New York state leading to a highly successful effort by all of the planners and hikers. Those who hiked received a Finger Lakes Trail patch.
On Sunday, June 3, the weather forecast changed plans for the Springwater Trails hike to Rattlesnake Hill. The venue was changed, yet five brave hikers enjoyed a five-mile hike along Canadice Lake from Purcell Hill to the midway point and back. Although the hike started in a minor drizzle, the sun shone brightly at the half-way point. The views of the beautiful lake and the early summer flowers (including buttercups and one three-foot-tall striking fox glove) helped maintain our spirits when a hard storm soaked everyone on the walk back to the cars.
Note that the hike next Sunday, June 10, will begin at 4 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to hike with Springwater Trails group after attending the Springwater Gala. Newcomers are always welcome. More details will be available by the end of the week at springwatertrails.com or townofspringwaterny.org under calendars.
The congregation at Websters Crossing United Methodist Church was again treated to a wonderful sermon “The Quintessence of Dust,” Sunday, June 3, presented by Pastor Jacque (pronounced “Jack”) Ruth. Being a retired school teacher, her explanation of the Biblical account of the how the earth was formed and the physics behind the “Big Bang Theory” had everyone on the edge of their seats.
Keep the 13th annual Springwater Gala on your calendar for June 8-10. Be sure to help a couple of hours if you can and/or plan to bring your whole family to a fun-filled experience. I hope to see you there!

On Thursday, June 14, our nation celebrates the Army's 237th birthday. On this date in 1775 the Second Continental Congress voted to “adopt” the Boston troops preparing to battle the British in Massachusetts, thus making them the nucleus of the Continental Army. They also authorized the formation of ten companies of expert riflemen from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, which were directed to march to Boston to support the New England militia. George Washington received his appointment as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army the next day, and formally took command at Boston on July 3, 1775. My fifth great-grandfather, Samuel Carpenter, was part of the original 10 companies of expert riflemen who served from the state of Massachusetts in that battle. He was a farmer by trade.
Page 2 of 2 - In honor of the anniversary of the founding of the Army, the Springwater American Legion will honor all service personnel active and inactive. All veterans and residents are also invited to attend the Flag Disposal Ceremony at 7 p.m. on the 14th of June at the Post. Several tattered flags have been turned into the Post for proper disposal and there is room for more. No flag should ever be tossed in the garbage. New flags are also available for purchase at the Post.
Monday, June 11, the Springwater Town Board will meet at the Town Hall at 7 p.m. This is the board’s working meeting and it is always good to see fellow residents attending. There is little input from the residents, but much can be learned by listening to the various committees’ reports.
A reminder – check your desk drawers and cupboards for any unused Springwater dump tickets and get them down to the Town Clerk’s office before June 30. Reimbursements will cease effective June 30.
Saturday morning at the Gala, Jacquie Canute will be hosting a special fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House in Buffalo. This is the second year that Jacquie has included a fundraiser during the Gala for this special cause dedicated to her beloved granddaughter, Lily, who was seriously ill and whose family received excellent assistance during Lily’s illness from the Ronald McDonald House. “For the Love of Lily” will include a bounce house, raffles and all around good fun that starts at 9 a.m., at the Gala. Last year $1200 was collected for this cause and Jacquie is hoping to make a donation this year of much more. Anyone who cannot attend the Gala but wants to make a donation can send checks made out to the Ronald McDonald House to Jacquie’s home, 7790 Harpers Ferry Rd, Springwater, NY 14560. Many prizes have been donated for the raffles and the weatherman is predicting good weather for the weekend, so come out early and have some fun.
Have a great week – see you at the Gala.
