  • Springwater Party Line: Astounded by latest technology

  • I received a back lighted keyboard to replace the keyboard that I have worn the lettering off of with use. It even has a built in palm rest and one touch volume controls for music and video! I never thought I would live this long to experience these innovations! So here it is year 2013 and time to wish you a joyous New Year.

  • Did you miss my column last week? Right, I did not do a column.

Before being away at the Scheiderich family home in Lee Center, I decided to take a short vacation and make an effort to not be connected to electronic equipment for a couple of weeks. That didn’t last long. My son-in-law showed me a computer that he can hold in his hand that has the capacity to do what took up a whole building space 60 years ago and couldn’t do anywhere near what this tiny device can do, and in much less time! He showed me another piece of equipment that can take slides (like for slide projectors) and change the images onto a compact disk in a short time at the going rate of a $1 per slide.

As a Christmas tree grower, I was glad to see last week’s column by Master Gardener Debbie MacCrea on recycling your Christmas tree by cutting off the branches and using the branches to protect your garden plants. Great idea! I’ll be doing that.

On Sunday, Jan. 6, 13 of us experienced the Springwater Trails hike in the state Department of Environmental Conservation area north of Hemlock Lake. Our last visit there was in March of 2011 as spring was starting. This time the trail was covered with snow; however, we enjoyed the falling snowflakes and the sight of the large oak tree, estimated to be over 300 years old. It took five of us to hold hands to completely go around the trunk with outstretched arms. Fifteen people hiked and 10 stayed afterwards to socialize at the Hemlock Grill. Next week we will be hiking over near Naples. Check out the winter hike schedule at the Springwater Trails website springwatertrails.org for more information. You may also download a Springwater Trails brochure to pass along to a friend who wants to know more about the group.
