Dansville’s Dick Applin was among a number of other veterans who, on Aug. 21 and 22, helped Honor Flight Rochester break the 500th veteran mark.

The Rochester hub for this national organization sends war veterans to visit their memorials in Washington, D.C. free of charge. Honor Flight Rochester is hoping to hit the 650 veteran mark by October. In photo, Applin, who served in the Army Air Corp from 1943 to 1946, is seen here at the Air Force Memorial with his nephew John Burnett of Dansville, who volunteered to be his guardian for the trip.
