Residents in the Finger Lakes region woke the day after Christmas to a storm warning projected to dump 8 to16 inches of snow and another 1 to 3 inches Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo said the winter storm warning remains in effect from 4 p.m. today until 1 p.m. Thursday for counties in the western Finger Lakes, including Ontario, Wayne and Monroe.
The heaviest snow is expected after sunset tosday through the night hours and into Thursday morning.

For holiday travelers, those going by land or air, the storm was already affecting schedules even before snow began falling in Ontario and surrounding counties Wednesday morning. More than a half dozen flights were canceled at the Greater Rochester International Airport due to bad weather. The first flights to be affected were arrivals and departures from Chicago and Cleveland, with a blizzard warning is in effect for Cleveland.

But for folks who love to ski and have been waiting for snowfall that has so far been sparse, the weather predictions are welcome. Bristol Mountain Winter resort in South Bristol today begins its night skiing hours, with weekday hours of operation from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., with weekends beginning an hour earlier, at 8 a.m. Before the projected snow storm, Bristol Mountain showed an Alpine base depth of 6 to12 inches, with overall conditions “fair.”

Meanwhile, on the weather end, travelers should be cautious, as winds from the northeast are projected at 20 to 30 miles per hour with visibility as low as a quarter-mile at times. Localized whiteout conditions, along with heavy snowfall will keep roads snow-covered, visibility poor, and travel conditions difficult.
