There were many tears shed, and heartache throughout the community this Christmas Eve.
Many people, including family friends and complete strangers, made their way to the West Webster Fire Department to offer condolences and drop off flowers.
The memorial grew bigger and bigger as the day progressed. Earlier Monday, flags were lowered to half staff. Firefighters joined together in prayer Monday afternoon outside of the station; all deeply affected by this loss.
"Very sad, I mean knowing that this happened very close to a holiday," says Webster resident Tamara Lacey. "It happened on a holiday, it's just very sad."
Cathy Poirier also went to the vigil. She says, "I think it's just a horrible time of year to bring people together. My first thought was here we go again and these poor families on Christmas Eve. What a horrible Christmas it's going to be for them. It's just so uncalled for."
Firefighters from many neighboring departments stopped by the station to offer their condolences. Many of those firefighters told News10NBC this is the time they really need to stick together.
One retired firefighter stopped by the station to drop off flowers. He said every first responder across the nation is feeling the loss.
Members of the Webster community say its going to take a long time before things get back to normal. We heard there are other vigils scheduled within the next few days and we will be posting times and locations as soon as the information is available.
