Tom Dougherty got a jump Monday on the 2013 general election by announcing his bid for Livingston County sheriff.

Before joining the county law enforcement agency, Dougherty completed a bachelor’s degree in business management at SUNY Geneseo. In Monday’s press release announcing his intention to seek elective office, Dougherty’s campaign highlighted his service since 2005 in the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, particularly a self-described “record of high-profile arrests, especially in the drug enforcement arena” and eight years in management with “a multi-million-dollar transportation company.”

“My combined experience of over sixteen years in the public and the private sectors gives me a unique outlook on managing a county department,” Dougherty said in the announcement.

The Dougherty campaign did not respond to inquiries regarding the candidate’s decision to challenge 23-year incumbent Sheriff John York. However, the campaign’s press release said Dougherty “will bring a fresh approach to the office, which needs improvements in fiscal responsibility and management to lessen the burden on the taxpayers. At the same time, he would maintain and build on the department’s rigorous focus on community safety ... which is his highest priority.”

The release indicated Dougherty plans to continue in his role at the county sheriff’s office during the campaign.

York declined to comment on Dougherty as a candidate and said he has not made a decision on his future plans.

He was unclear, however, as to whether he would seek re-election.
