On a history making day at Brighton, nobody was smiling brighter than Devan Carter.

The senior running back signed his letter of intent to play football Rutgers next season in a ceremony on Wednesday at the high school. Carter became the first Baron football player to sign with a BCS school.

Despite having his injury cut short due to a leg injury, Carter rushed for 987 yards and 11 touchdowns in five games last fall. Carter, who also played linebacker at Brighton, will go into college as a running back.

Carter chose the Scarlet Knights over Syracuse. Rutgers will begin play in the Big Ten Conference beginning in 2014.

Why did you choose Rutgers for next year?
“I felt Rutgers was the right fit. I loved the coaches and the people and I have made some connections with them. I’m very excited. I can’t wait to go there and work out and develop myself as a player and as a student.”

Did the coaching change at Syracuse have any effect on your decision?
“Maybe a little, but not to a significant extent that it would make my change my decision from Syracuse to Rutgers. It was more of a personal situation.”

What are your thoughts on being the first Brighton football player to sign with a BCS school?
“When I first found that out I never knew, so I was really excited. It felt good to be part of a little bit history. It got me pumped and amped to see it is possible to be from Brighton and be a Division I football player.”

Did Rutgers moving to the Big Ten play in to your decision at all?
“Not really. I think anywhere you are going to go you are going to play tough competition. I have to first compete against my teammates before I compete against other schools. Where ever I am, I am going to have to compete.”

What have the last few years been like for you?
“It showed me responsibility and work ethic because when I was freshman and sophomore I never expected any of this. I loved football, wanted to play with my friends. I saw that if I worked hard I could be a success.”
