The Brighton boys cross country team began their post-season with a strong showing in the Monroe County Championships held at a very soggy Parma Park. The conditions, although muddy, proved to produce some very fast times on the new course.

Junior Will Ronchetti led the team placing fifth in 16:02 followed by teammate Andrew Mullen in 24th place both earning All-County honors.

Junior Zak Simpson, sophomore Mason Vodacek and senior Ari Kramer also had great races despite the less than ideal course conditions placing 37th, 44th and 52nd respectively. Rounding out the scoring were Neil Ryan and Ty Joseph.

In the Varsity B race freshman Drew Schmitt ran a very strong race finishing second (17:07) with teammate Caleb Enis coming in 12th in 17:48. Stephen Chess, Ian Crowley-Perry and Jeremiah Piersante all finished off strong seasons in this race placing 25th, 28th and 41st.

This past weekend the team traveled to Genesee Community College to compete in the Section 5 Championships. Although muddy in spots the course held up well to the rain of the previous week.

The blustery winds and cold temperatures however proved worthy adversaries and were reflected in somewhat slower times. With New York State Meet berths at stake this was a very tight race coming into the finish.

Three runners - Jack Wesley (Pittsford Mendon), J.T. Paganelli (Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Ronchetti were shoulder to shoulder coming around the bend leading into the finish. Wesley pulled ahead with Paganelli and Ronchetti right behind respectively.

Ronchetti was third (16:52) earning a spot on the Section 5 Class B State team traveling to Elma Meadows in Buffalo next weekend. Teammate Andrew Mullen was the Barons’ next finisher in 14th place followed by the tight pack of Zak Simpson, Ari Kramer and Mason Vodacek in 19th, 20th and 21st places.

Rounding out the top seven were freshman stand out Drew Schmitt, who battled illness all week, coming in 32nd and senior co-captain Neil Ryan placing 42nd.

The Brighton girls cross country team wrapped up its season on Saturday running in the Section 5 Class B Championship. The meet was held on a cold, wind-swept course at Genesee Community College in Batavia.

Baron head coach Steve Pulos noted the weather conditions were among the worst that he’s encountered at Sectionals. Times were more than a minute slower in nearly every race that was run that day.

Nevertheless Brighton competed well, finishing fifth in the 13 school race. The highlight for the team was the strong performance of Alexa Campbell whose time of 20:33 placed her eighth in the field of 91 athletes.

Campbell’s performance earned her a spot on the Section 5 team that will compete at the state Championships next Saturday at Elma Meadows. Also running well for Brighton were Talia Pinker who placed 26th (22:08), Ann Wilkinson (22:35), Kate Costanza (22:38) and Alexa Bower (22:46).

Madi Carter (23:02) and Mandy Smith (23:57) completed the scoring for Brighton.
