Camerann Smith didn’t know what to expect when she tried out for the Pittsford Sutherland varsity field hockey team as a sophomore.
Smith earned a spot on the Knights that season. Quickly into the season, Smith’s expectations for herself and field hockey career were on the rise.
Last week, Smith accomplished one of the biggest goals of her career when she signed her national letter of intent to play for Fairfield beginning next season. Smith, who scored the game-winning goal in the Knights sectional victory over East Rochester last fall, was a three-year varsity player for Sutherland.
Smith played an integral role in all three of the Knights sectional title victories the last three seasons.
In 2010, Smith she scored a goal in penalty strokes against Pittsford Mendon. The following year she helped the Knights overcome an early deficit scoring the goal that tied the game in the Knights 2-1 win over the Vikings.
Why did you choose Fairfield for next year?
“When I walked on campus I knew that is where I wanted to go. It felt like home. I was asking people where they wanted to go to school and they would always tell me when you walked on campus, you would just know. I didn’t believe it, I felt comfortable at Fairfield.”
How was the college search process for you?
“I had a wide range of schools because I wasn’t sure I wanted to go. I looked at schools throughout New York but also schools in the South. I started my sophomore year. It was really stressful because I had no idea what I wanted to do. It was overwhelming first, but I narrowed it down and that helped.”
What are some of your favorite moments from your high school playing career?
“My sophomore year I wasn’t expecting to make the varsity, and when I made the team that put into perspective that I might be able to play in college. I played every game and in the sectional finals I played in both overtimes. I was happy to score in all three of my sectional final games.”
How do you want to get better before the fall?
“I think mostly I need to work on my speed and getting to use to receiving and passing the ball. In college, the game isn’t stop and go like it is in high school. If you lose possession, it takes you a while to get it back.”
