Erin Lyons put back with 21 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winning basket as Pittsford Mendon defeated Honeoye Falls-Lima 54-53 in a Monroe County Division II girls basketball game on Friday at HF-L.

Lyons rebounded a missed three-pointer, and converted a put back after getting an offensive rebound. The senior forward finished with 26 points, with 14 coming in the second half.

The Cougars led by three points late in the quarter, but Viking senior guard Lauren D’Hont banked in a three-pointer to tie the game at 51 with 2:36 left. D’Hont converted one of two free throws to give Mendon a 52-51 lead with 1:51 left.

HF-L’s Nicole Davis made a layup to give the Cougars a 53-52 lead with 45 seconds remaining. The Cougars had one last look to win the game but missed a jumper with five seconds remaining and the Vikings grabbed the rebound and ran out the clock.

Leading by two at the half, HF-L gained control of the game in the third quarter.

The Cougars led by seven twice in the quarter, but Lyons converted a three-point play to cut the deficit to 47-43 going into the fourth.

HF-L gained their first lead of the game late in the second quarter as Nicole Davis converted a three-point play to open up a 27-26 lead. The Cougars took a 31-29 lead at the half.

Mendon continued their recent success against HF-L as they have won 10 straight meetings. The Vikings defeated the Cougars 58-35 on Dec. 27 in the Mendon Holiday Tournament.

HF-L returns to action against Greece Athena at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Roberts Wesleyan, while Mendon will play at Division II rival Irondequoit at 7:45 p.m. on Friday.
