Dansville’s Mustangs needed of a lift of some kind on Friday night when they jumped back into Division 1 boys’ basketball action at home against Bath-Haverling. The Rams posted a nine-point lead in the game, only to see Dansville tighten up the defense and shut out Bath in the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run to cap a 42-30 win.
“We played great defense tonight which was a big key for us as we struggled a bit on offense,” Mustangs coach Dave Moodie said.
The victory is Dansville’s fourth in a row and square’s the Mustang’s record 4-4 overall and 1-2 in Livingston County Athletics Association Division 1.
Midway through the first quarter, the Rams were hot as Will Smith hit a pair of baskets to put Bath up 11-5. Those 11 first-quarter points wound up more than the Rams would muster during the remaining three periods.
Dansville shaved the deficit to one point, but Bath got going again as Eric Ratchford sank a basket from outside the three-point line and Trevor Lang added a bucket inside to push it to 19-10.
Bath only connected on five more field goals and one free throw the remainder of the game. And while the Mustangs weren’t setting the world on fire offensively, they tied the game 22-22 at intermission when Gio Mountzouros made a steal in the back court and laid it in with just seconds remaining.
The teams traded buckets in the third as Geoff VanDunk’s tip-in at the buzzer gave Dansville a slim 32-30 lead with one quarter left.
Bath failed to score in the final eight minutes. Junior forward Brandon Day fired up his teammates score nine second-half points and grabbed almost as many rebounds in the process. Day scored six of Dansville’s 10 points in the fourth with Mountzouros and Jack Toomey each dropping a pair of free throws.
