Well, it wasn’t like winning last November’s Sectional Championship match-up, but on Friday night the Wayland-Cohocton football team claimed its first victory of the year as the Golden Eagles held off a hungry Lions team late in the game for an exciting 28-26 triumph in high school football.

Eagles coach Joe Sabo stated, “Man, I’m glad we got that one. At times both teams looked like a million bucks and other times it looked like we owed a million.”

The contest went back and forth a bit all night long. Wayland-Cohocton opened the scoring in the first period when Devon Harris raced 52 yards for a touchdown and Dan Wilkinson booted the extra point making it a 7-0 game.

A couple series later Way-Co fumbled the football. The Lions scooped it up and went in for a touchdown, but missed the PAT and Way-Co held a slim 7-6 edge. The Lions roared into the lead at the half 14-7.

In the third, the Eagles tied things up again when C.J. Ellis connected with Darren Becker for a 54-yard scoring strike, making it a 14-14 game.

Way-Co stormed into the lead in the fourth when Reece Chapman broke free on a 36-yard touchdown run and later Devon Harris hit paydirt with an eight-yard scoring run making it 28-14.

Wellsville came right back late in the game and rallied for a pair of scores and went for two on the last touchdown and kept the Lions out of the end zone, holding on for a 28-26 win.
